Viki Johnston

Viki Johnston, a Brit who has recently moved to Southern California with her family, is a self-confessed learning junkie. Having flunked out of school at 17, she spent the next 30 (cough) years trying to figure out why learning stuff is so hard. She made it her mission to help others believe in their abilities and achieve more than they thought possible. Now through her coaching and business focused training she helps others to experience the "lightbulb moment" and strive to greatness.

Her heroes are Sir Richard Branson and Brené Brown for their inspiration, and her Husband, whom without she would never have been able to live a life full of her own "light bulb moments".

The Power of Presence

Unlocking Influence by Showing Up as an Authentic Leader

Have you ever noticed how some people effortlessly command attention and inspire change simply by being present in the room?

Presence isn’t just about occupying space—it’s about connecting deeply, communicating authentically, and influencing others to take positive action.

When presenting or engaging with others, your presence can transform an ordinary moment into an opportunity for meaningful impact.

Why Presence Matters

Presence is the foundation of effective communication. It’s more than confidence; it’s a mix of authenticity, vulnerability, and kindness.

People are moved not by perfection, but by those who are genuine, relatable, and caring. When you show up as yourself—open to sharing your experiences and willing to listen—you build trust and encourage others to act positively.

Top Tips for Cultivating Presence in the Room

  1. Be Authentic: Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Authenticity resonates. Share your true thoughts and feelings, and people will connect with you on a deeper level.

  2. Embrace Vulnerability: Vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness. Admitting you don’t have all the answers or sharing personal stories can spark empathy and motivate action.

  3. Show Kindness: Approach every interaction with compassion. Kindness opens doors and hearts, making people more receptive to your message.

  4. Listen Actively: Presence is as much about listening as speaking. Pay attention, ask questions, and let others know their voices matter.

  5. Mind Your Body Language: Maintain eye contact, open posture, and relaxed demeanor. Non-verbal cues signal confidence and approachability.

  6. Speak with Purpose: Be clear and intentional. Use stories, examples, and positive language to inspire action.

What can you do now?

Next time you step into a room—whether presenting, leading, or simply sharing—remember that your presence matters.

Commit to showing up authentically, vulnerably, and kindly. Influence isn’t about impressing others; it’s about connecting and inspiring them to take positive action.

What is your next opportunity to share an important message? Let me know how you plan to show up as your authentic self?
