The Power of Releasing Limiting Beliefs

What belief do you have that holds you back?

We all carry stories about who we are and what we’re capable of. Some are supportive, while others are waving red flags and blocking our way. These create limiting beliefs. Before we know it, these stories have become so convincing that they slow us down or even keep us stuck in the same place.

Limiting beliefs rarely show up all at once. They arrive piece by piece, built from past experiences, things we’ve heard, or stories we’ve told ourselves. Sometimes it’s one dramatic event; other times, it’s a collection of little moments that add up. Our unconscious mind, always trying to look out for us, starts constructing a wall—one it hopes will keep out future disappointments, but one that also keeps out opportunity and adventure.

As we go about our days, we tend to notice those things that confirm our beliefs (thanks, brain!), while anything that disagrees gets swept under the rug. The result? We can end up convinced our limits are real, missing a world of possibility beyond them.

They could begin in childhood with being small and protected, backing down or sharing to be good, or sitting quietly to be rewarded.

As an adult these can turn into staying small, people pleasing and passive behaviors.

Often people who are terrified of public speaking have an unconscious belief that they should be seen and not heard.

Here’s the good news: you’re the author of your own story, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) offers some fabulous editing tools.

NLP helps us spot the old scripts, and write new, more empowering lines.

With tricks like reframing (looking at old events with fresh eyes) or anchoring (linking confidence to a gesture or thought), you can swap out heavy, restrictive beliefs for ones that feel lighter and more inspiring.

It’s about noticing when a belief is just a story, not a fact. With awareness (and a dash of curiosity), you can gently start to rewrite your inner dialogue, letting go of what you simply don’t need anymore.

I recently co-hosted a Release and Rise event with a friend, and we witnessed first-hand the difference a few hours of focused and supported exercise can have. 10 incredible women joined us for a day of education, self-reflection and collaboration, walking away lighter, more energized and excited for their next steps.

Viki Johnston, a Brit who moved to Southern California with her family, is a self-confessed learning junkie. Having flunked out of school at 17, she spent the next 30 (cough) years trying to figure out why learning stuff is so hard. She made it her mission to help others believe in their abilities and achieve more than they thought possible. Now through her coaching and business focused training she helps others to experience the "light bulb moment" and strive to greatness.
Her heroes are Sir Richard Branson and Brené Brown for their inspiration, and her Husband, whom without she would never have been able to live a life full of her own "light bulb moments".
